This year marked the sixth annual “Turkey Bowl” at National University in Florida. A highly celebrated tradition among NUHS Florida faculty, staff and students since its first play-off in 2009, the flag football tournament is played rain or shine. This year’s weather was breezy and in the high 60s with just a few sprinkles for the evening event.
39 students played in this year’s Bowl, with the winning team being “The Slaughtered Lambs,” composed of 9th and 10th trimester students. The coveted Stiefel Cup trophy was much larger this year, motivating top effort from all four teams. The trophy will be passed down every year to the winners, and will reside in the Student Services office for all to enjoy in between Turkey Bowls.
This year’s “Most Valuable Professor” was Dr. Michelle Jourdan who also won the coveted honor in 2012. The 2014 “Most Valuable Student Player” designation was awarded to Bryan Nicholas.
The games were held at the Seminole Recreation Center. With the largest turnout ever in Turkey Bowl history, spectators and players alike enjoyed delicious food delivered by Greek Islands Restaurant.
Performance Health, Inc. donated 100 gift packages of products from their major health and wellness brands. Performance Health covers an entire spectrum of health and wellness needs for both patients and professionals addressing rehab, sports medicine, pain relief and performance enhancement.
“We especially appreciate Performance Health’s participation in this year’s event, ” says Dr. Stiefel. “The gift bags were appropriate for the student and faculty athletes who, after the rigors of our game, will find out exactly how helpful Biofreeze and Thera-Pearls can be.”
President Stiefel, who fired up the crowd by recalling how both he and Florida Dean Dr. Daniel Strauss had broken bones in previous Turkey Bowls, says: “I always try and plan my schedule to be at our Florida site for the game. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
