These last couple of weeks have been super fun, super stressful, but all around awesome! A couple weeks ago, we had Naturopathic Medicine Week. Our school competed hard, under the leadership of our chapter president Janice, who organized what seemed like a thousand events to help our school earn points in the national competition where we competed against the other schools.

It turns out her effort paid off! After initially thinking we came in 3rd place, apparently scores were recalculated, and it turns out we won! We won the Golden Avocado!

This might not seem like a huge deal, but I can assure you…it is! Our school now has both the NMSA Cup trophy and the Golden Avocado!  I think both trophies are a testament to the strength of our program, our students, and our faculty for helping give us the knowledge and skills to get there.

One of the many events I attended during Naturopathic Medicine Week was a creative arts event.  There were all sorts of craft projects you could do. I took a canvas, but since I am not super artistic, I decided to write on the canvas “You Got This.” I then had people at the event sign it…while I was walking around campus with it, other students wanted to sign it as well, which was super fun. During the brutal few weeks of midterm exams it was a good reminder to each of us to hang in there.

White Coat Ceremony Fall 2018

Friday was the White Coat Ceremony for the new students. I decided to attend with a couple friends who started with me. We can’t believe we have been here almost a year, it seems like just yesterday we were having our own White Coat Ceremony. These photos make me smile…I like to flip my hair before a photo. I didn’t realize that part was getting photographed. Anyway, congratulations again to the new students!

On Surrender

As students, we often lament that school is hard, implying an unspoken expectation that life should not be hard. This assumption is dangerous because beauty results from difficultly. The times in life when we are desperate invite us to recognize a grand plan, one that extends beyond our own life, and surrender to it.

This simple metaphor captures a complex concept. In a handful of words, Hafez illustrates a helpful psychological principle that also comprises the theological core of the world’s largest religion – that of relationship based on mutual delight, adoration and love.

To Gain the World and Lose Your Soul

I once had a season of life in which I wrestled to reconcile the trade-off between gaining the world and losing my soul. In a great act of mercy, I lost. Looking back, I realize my biggest blind spot was my stubbornness and pride. I thought I knew what was best for me and obstinately pursued it, instead of focusing my heart on assurance and surrendering the rest to servanthood.
