Greetings, spine enthusiasts! As a Tri-9 chiropractic student here at NUHS, I can’t help but notice the abundance of misconceptions floating around about our profession. It’s time to set the record straight and debunk some of the most common myths surrounding chiropractic treatment. So, grab your adjustment tables and let’s dive in!

Myth #1: “Cracking” Sounds Mean Something Is Breaking:

The notorious “cracking” sound…Contrary to popular belief, that satisfying noise is not bones breaking or popping out of place. It’s simply the release of gas bubbles within the joint, like the sound when you crack your knuckles.

Myth #2: Chiropractic Care Is Unsafe:

Safety concerns are valid, but chiropractic care is considered one of the safest forms of health care. We undergo extensive training. Chiropractic schooling encompasses courses that align with medical school courses to provide a comprehensive understanding of the human body and health care. Core subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and pathology are taught in both chiropractic and medical programs to ensure a strong foundation in medical sciences. Additionally, we, chiropractic students, also study radiology, neurology, and clinical diagnosis, which are fundamental to diagnosing and treating patients. Chiropractors tailor treatments to suit each patient’s needs, ensuring maximum safety and effectiveness.

Myth #3: Chiropractic Care Is Ineffective:

Countless studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic care for various conditions. From back pain and headaches to sciatica and sports injuries, chiropractic treatment offers drug-free, non-invasive solutions. A research article published in 2013 discussed the effectiveness of adding chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) to standard medical care for patients with acute low back pain and their results demonstrated a significant decrease in patients’ disability scores and mean back pain functional scale scores that were significantly improved. Collaborating with other medical professions can accelerate and enhance treatment. Don’t underestimate the power of those adjustments!

Myth #4: Chiropractors Only Focus on the Spine:

Holistic care is the name of the game in chiropractic! While the spine plays a crucial role, we (chiropractors) consider the overall health of patients. We recognize the interconnectedness of the body and address factors like nutrition, gait, posture, exercise, mental health, and lifestyle habits to promote overall well-being. There are so many diverse niches in the field of chiropractic. Chiropractors can specialize in sports medicine, pediatric, functional medicine, geriatric, neurology, orthopedic, rehabilitation, radiology, ergonomic, etc, and even veterinary chiropractic!

Just like chiropractic care benefits humans, chiropractic care for animals can promote musculoskeletal health, relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being in our furry friends! For any future chiropractors reading this blog, the world is your oyster and there are so many great options for you to dive into in the field of chiropractic!

Myth #5: Chiropractic Care Is Only for Physical Health:

Chiropractic treatment has far-reaching effects beyond physical health. By improving spinal health and nerve function, it can positively impact mental health and immune function. A properly aligned spine facilitates better communication between the brain and the body, leading to improved mental clarity and a strengthened immune system.

Personal Thoughts on Making a Difference

When I first entered chiropractic school, I believed that what we did was adjust and treat spinal conditions.
