The last two weeks have been very rainy and windy here in Florida. We survived the first storm of the season (Alberto) without any incidence. It is nice to have the sun come back out today! Coming from New Mexico, it’s a little weird for me to have so much rain and water around. My classmates find it odd that I get so excited when it rains, but when I explain that the average YEARLY rainfall back home is 8.5 inches and here in the Tampa area we got 10.2 inches (before May!!), they realize that I’m just excited to get some use out of my umbrella!
Last week was the first Sports Council club meeting since I became club president and I think that it went pretty well. I ran a discussion on Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) – with the help of Tom and Crystal, my vice president and secretary – and we demonstrated some applications for soft tissue therapy for our club members to try out. All three of us have taken IASTM courses since starting school here. Nearly all of the companies that offer continuing education courses and classes on advanced technique give large discounts to students in chiropractic programs, which makes it easier to explore new treatment options and practices before we even get to clinic (and, it’s relatively affordable too!). I had a blast coordinating and running the instruction and it was definitely a huge help having Tom and Crystal there to help. I was a little nervous how everyone would feel about the first meeting, but our members said they enjoyed it, so I’ll count that as a win!
Finally, this weekend I ran a 5K with some friends from the program. It was the “Best Damn Race – Leftover 5K,” a fun event where they gave us shirts and medals from previous Best Damn Races. I ended up running a PR (22:11.1) and barely missed making the podium for my age group. It was a nice, cheap race and was certainly a fun day. Looking forward to running the next race with these guys!
