As I delve into the final stretch of my chiropractic program, I find myself knee-deep in preparation for Part 3 Boards. Board exams are notorious for their comprehensive nature, covering a vast array of clinical scenarios, radiology imaging, and treatment protocols. While the sheer volume of material can definitely be overwhelming, I do appreciate the practicality and relevance of the knowledge gained. The majority of the material is directly applicable to my current state as an intern as it helps me better understand conditions and learn to identify them in patients.
Studying for boards has made me very aware of the intricate interplay between the theoretical and practical aspects of chiropractic care. I have learned to appreciate the importance of understanding the underlying anatomical structures, physiological processes, and biomechanics that direct our patients’ conditions. This knowledge allows me to provide evidence-based care, which ensures that my treatment plans are not just a “shot in the dark” approach, but rooted in a solid foundation of understanding. Through my classes at NUHS and board studying, I have been learning to synthesize information from various sources, interpret diagnostic tests, and generate appropriate treatment plans. This analytical mindset has been carried over into clinic, where I can confidently evaluate patients, identify key issues, and tailor my treatment plan accordingly.

During my 9th trimester, I have tried seizing every opportunity to expand my clinical knowledge and skills. With several shorter days in the clinic during the week, I have been actively seeking out shadowing experiences with experienced chiropractors in the area. Last week, I had the privilege of shadowing a fantastic chiropractor who specializes in treating the general population and has acquired outstanding reviews. This experience was nothing short of eye-opening. Not only did I witness the application of various chiropractic techniques, but I also observed the immense depth of knowledge and commitment to evidence-based science demonstrated by this practitioner. It was quite inspiring to see how he easily navigated between patients, treating each carefully, and leaving them feeling relieved. He mentioned to me the importance of “quality of care.” As a holistic field, it’s important to check in with each patient on all aspects of health, including mental health. While his appointments were brief, the quality of his time between each patient was admirable. He made each patient feel important and heard. It was very inspiring, and I hope to also adopt that quality.
