Outreach in Clinic

As an intern, I am required to obtain outreach hours for volunteer work in the community. This past week a fellow intern and I went to a local assisted living facility to give a presentation on posture and health.

As chiropractors, we focus mostly on the spine so we discussed the importance of taking care of one’s spine into old age. We went over a few exercises to improve posture, mobility, and functionality. We then did the exercises with our audience and answered their questions about chiropractic, exercise, and general health. It was a rewarding experience as many of the residents at the facility were happy to have visitors. I had some great conversations afterwards and they were happy to do the exercises with us to improve their physical health.

Over the weekend, many of our students went to the International Triathlon Union World Cup in Sarasota, Florida. Elite athletes from all over the world came to compete. At National University of Health Sciences in Florida, we have access to many large professional and amateur sporting events through our Sports Council. As an intern I can volunteer and provide care under the supervision of licensed chiropractors to the athletes at these events. They are often unique opportunities and I am excited to participate in them as an NUHS intern.

It is hard to believe I am almost halfway done with clinic. I have been consistently seeing new patients as well as continuing care with established patients. I can see patients at the sports events as well and work on educating others in the community during our community outreach. Clinic has been great thus far and I am looking forward to what these next 25 weeks have in store for me.

Personal Thoughts on Making a Difference

When I first entered chiropractic school, I believed that what we did was adjust and treat spinal conditions. However, chiropractic care is so much more than any individual aspect of care; it is an ideology of wholistic health care not driven from the treatment of illnesses, but actually aligning all aspects of life with the ultimate goal of health and preventive care.
