I worked my very first Campus Visit Day! It’s a twice a year event put on but our school’s Admissions department allowing prospective students a chance to see what being a student here is all about. We give tours, run simulated classes, current students and staff put on alternative therapy technique demos, and all of our clubs are on campus to show off the more social aspect of life here.
Part of my job was to sit on a student panel. Answering all of the questions led me to reminisce about what my life was just a few short years ago. More than once during the event, after seeing all that was involved with our programs, I heard a comment about how overwhelming this all seems. Yes, sometimes living this life is completely overwhelming. I think that I am getting better at answering the “two kids, two degrees, how do you do it?” question though.
The answer is that I am learning how to do it every day. As with learning any new thing, there are failures…and the sooner you can accept that, the quicker you can move on and learn from them. I think this is part of the reason that during the first trimester here as DC students, people struggle as much as they do. They haven’t learned how to be this kind of student yet. I feel like I used to spend so much more time studying than I do now; however, the biggest reason for this is because I’ve learned to study more effectively.
Every one learns best in different ways, and learning how to learn is half of the battle. There used to be a lot more trial and error involved in this process in the beginning. When I look from the outside in at what it is to become a Doctor of Chiropractic or Naturopathic medicine, it’s easy to see why it’s not a path that many choose to take. You are choosing never to stop learning, to be a student for life.
Putting it that it that way it sounds like a daunting task, but when learning is your focus, growth comes along with it. I am happy to choose growth; it means that I will always be able to look back and think, “Wow…I really have come so far!”
