Dr. Roy Settergren earned his DC from National University in 2009, and his MSACP in 2012. He currently has a busy private practice in the River North area of downtown Chicago. Here’s what he has to say about the Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice (MSACP) at NUHS:
“In practice, the program gave me a better diagnostic approach. My initial history taking with patients changed as a result, and it gave me a better more well-rounded view of pathology. I have a better understanding of how a patient might present with something that looks musculoskeletal, but is actually an internal disorder.”
“We had quite a few classes on nutrition that gave me a better ability to discuss nutrition and inflammation, and the impact it has on a person’s health. Here in downtown Chicago, many people understand healthy eating and the effects of inflammation. I now have a better understanding of the biochemistry behind inflammation and can better explain to them how and why their diet works.
“Also, part of the program involves working on research projects and learning how to publish an article. Not only did I discover that I had an interest in research, because of the program I now have two articles published. One article allowed me the opportunity to speak in Vancouver, Canada at the International Research Congress on Fascia. That was an amazing opportunity to meet and confer with people from all over the world.
“The other publication was on an ultrasound dry-needling technique. My patients have actually become interested in my article and have shared it with their acupuncturists. I was also recently contacted by one of the governors of a French college of chiropractic, who wants to set up an interview on dry needling as well. These are all opportunities stemming from the MSACP program.
“I’d recommend the MSACP program to other DCs. As a profession we have a very comprehensive education in musculoskeletal medicine, but this program does an excellent job in making us more well-rounded clinicians to manage all disorders, not just those that are musculoskeletal.”
